No doubt the householder was a wealthy landowner: vineyards don't run at a profit until thy have been tended for many years and so represent a considerable investment for a luxury cash-crop probably for an international market. The presence of a steward – probably one of many – is another clue to the economic status of the householder or more literally “house-despot”.
We tend to assume that powerful figures in parables represent God even if, as in this case, they profit from the poorly-paid, sun-beaten and exploited day-labourers.

So let's throw aside the complicated allegorical readings of the parable, so loved by theologians-past and do two important things that may turn this story from a bit of Christian whimsy into something that actually matters. First let's take it at face value; this is a story about a God's values in relation to land and labour, second let's begin not with the most powerful figure but with the powerless.
The day labourers aren't quite the poorest of the poor but they aren't far off. Perhaps they once owned a little land; handed down from generations, but a few bad harvests and a couple of weddings later and they found themselves in debt and having to sell their livestock, land, and finally even their home to the big farming companies who turned the whole area over to cash crops and started hiring by-the-day.

Such labourers are still around today so it doesn't take too much imagination: we have our eastern European seasonal workers on illegally poor wages in English mega-farms, we have our Chinese cockle-pickers risking their lives in our unforgiving seas, we have our agency workers in warehouse offices able to be dismissed at a moment’s notice. And we have pension funds, supermarkets, the Queen, insurance companies, and the Church of England – owning or buying up greater amounts of land from family farmers and squeezing every penny of profit from the soil to devastating effect on wildlife and on communities.

So let's picture the scene that Jesus paints for us. A group of landless men and women gather at dawn at the town gate. All of them are desperate to work, all of them are a few meals away from starvation. Naturally the youngest and fittest will be chosen first because they will be the best value for money. The least able and the elderly will be left standing through the heat of the day waiting for landowners to get desperate enough to give them work. It's these folk who are at the very bottom of the spiral of poverty: the weaker they get the less they earn, the less they earn the weaker they get. This is a meritocracy: each is given according to his or her ability. It's fair and just in a secular logic: if you work you earn if you don't work you don't earn.

But Jesus' story has a twist in the telling. Because in Jesus' economy things are different: there are no undeserving poor. There are only needs and the loving desire to meet them. It is the rich who are undeserving in Jesus' economy because they take more than they need and merit is no excuse for greed while others starve in the kingdom of God.

What Jesus was suggesting in this parable: that God wants to give us all we need rather than just what we deserve was nothing short of scandalous, even blasphemy. But is it so different today?

There are at least two challenges in this parable. First, the challenge to see needs and meet them regardless of merit or reward. The second, to begin to ask the questions about how these people came to be in such a vulnerable position in the first place and who benefits from keeping working people vulnerable to poverty and exploitation.

The seventeenth century visionary and theologian Gerard Winstanley called the earth a “common treasury” belonging to God and gifted to us all. He recognised the profound link between economy, ecology, and theology. Drawing on that other visionary who described for us in the Old Testament 'the jubilee' he reminds us that we give it all back to God or we imperil first our worth and then our very lives.
The Kingdom of God is like.... What is it like? What sort of world does Jesus describe and how can we proclaim it for our land and our county.

A Just Church in Bradford: Placement Part Two

Bradford

Bradford might be called ‘post-industrial’, ‘multicultural’, ‘gritty northern’, ‘historic’ and many not so nice things too. It certainly has a rich history of social movements and an industrial hey-day that is long-since over. It thrives now because of the many people from around the world who have made this city their home often risking their personal safety to defend it. Bradford has a long tradition of peacemaking as the origins of CND it also has a Peace Museum, a Peace Garden, and a Peace Studies department.

We spent two weeks with Revd Chris Howson and his family this summer as part of a placement to explore new models of Christian witness. Chris is a city centre priest who has set up a ‘fresh expression’ of church inspired by Liberation theology.

Exploring the City

We met with folk from the Peace Studies department at the University and went to a talk on the way Bradford has responded to rioting over the last two decades but we also spent time with local city people and places. The week before I arrived there had been a death outside Desmond Tutu House, a member of the Polish community who had passed out drunk. Chris has developed good relationships with many local Poles and so we visited a Polish restaurant so he could find out more. Through conversations with the owner we were able to offer meaningful support and condolences too.

We also took several trips to the abandoned places of the city. Just five minutes from the city centre there are square miles of abandoned mills towering up. Most of these are in a dangerous condition, some have been developed but left un-let and some are stuck inbetween. We wandered through rubble, weeds, and forgotten passages as Chris told some of the past and recent history of the city through its buildings. It gave me cause to reflect on the future of cities as we hit peak-oil and as more of our industrial base disappears. It also reminded me of being a child when all these kind of places were part of your playground – albeit a dangerous part.

Space for Justice

SoulSpace meets on Sundays at noon in a rented church room in the city. The congregation began as predominantly students but has become a widen to include adults of all ages and a few children over the years. These folk are students, locals, asylum seekers, and refugees who have come together with a faith in a God of peace and justice. The liturgy is pretty orthodox except that it is more participatory than many churches but the theology and action has a radical edge showing that ‘fresh’ doesn’t have to involve technical presentations but needs a fresh authenticity.

JustSpace meets each Tuesday at Desmond Tutu House. There is usually a presentation from an activist from abroad or locally focussed or a film followed by discussion. JustSpace includes people who are less geared towards church but still see the importance of social justice and activism and what to get involved and it’s a way into activism for many in the SoulSpace congregation.

Desmond Tutu House

Desmond Tutu House is the hub of a lot of exciting things going on in the city. It is home to Britain’s first Fair Trade Café and a Fair Trade Shop. The regional CND offices are based on site as well as a peace library, a liberation theology library, and the Yorkshire Zapatista group supporting a local resistance movement in South America. Desmond Tutu House is also the centre for much of the work done by Chris and others bringing faith and justice together in the city.

Each morning we would meet at Desmond Tutu House for Morning Prayer and then spend time with those who turned up often with very particular needs. In many ways Chris’ job is that of university chaplain. For Morning Prayer we used Common Worship for Ordinary Radicals. The phrase ‘ordinary radicals’ was coined by Shane Claiborne an American ‘new monastic’ who believes that radical living should be an ordinary to Christian discipleship rather than something glamorous and ‘cool’.

Spaces for Listening

It was a privilege to spend time with Barbara Glasson from Touchstone Centre around the corner from Desmond Tutu House. Barbara set up ‘Somewhere Else’ in Liverpool. It is often known as ‘the bread church’ and was a place where people would make bread, pray together, and have lunch together. Through Somewhere Else a space was made available for anyone to open up and begin to rediscover themselves. The place was a particular important place for the homeless, street workers, and asylum seekers in the area as well as the Christian LGBT community. Under Barbara’s leadership Touchstone has begun to focus on weaving as a metaphor and a means of gathering to work together and listen to one another.

Conferences

The focus for my visit to Bradford was a Practical Liberation Theology conference held at Desmond Tutu house half way through the fortnight. Chris, Barbara, and myself organised the event and I led one of the workshops. A few days before the conference we went to a similar day conference at the Urban Theology Unit in Sheffield a place I have always been inspired by and wanted to visit. The highlight of all this for me was a role-play of the cleansing of the temple involving around thirty people. Not only did we enter completely into our roles but it led to some fascinating insights into the story and opportunities for us all to reflect on our involvement in direct action.

Intentional Community

One of the reasons for the two placements at London Catholic Worker Farmhouse and in Bradford was to explore the do-ability of Intentional Community: Living in an extended household with some or all property in common in order to better serve a wider purpose. We have lived in communal houses many times before but never as part of an ‘intentional’ set-up. It was a good reminder of all the pros and cons to be living as guests for the four weeks but being guests is very different from being members.

We were invited to join with a group of neighbours who met each week for a shared meal in one another’s houses in order to broaden their neighbourliness. This led to other invitations: one to a meeting about Christian Intentional Community and another to a volunteer day at a newly emerging Community Farm.

The Community Farm is in a wilderness of abandoned Allotment spaces that the Council have handed over to the group on a low rent. Much of the ground is splintered with glass, overgrown, and full of junk but a start has been made and ground cleared for a polytunnel. The four of us helped out one afternoon clearing rubbish from the emerging site with some of the members. We are part of a more established group based in Gloucester and Stroud so it was great to see a new project of a similar kind emerging in Bradford too. This is shared life without shared household but there are overlaps in process and intent.

The meeting about Christian Intentional Community involved people mostly involved in SoulSpace. Many were sharing resources already and in and out of each other’s homes. Some had come to the meeting out of curiosity and others because they were keen to get something going. It was the first meeting of what is likely to be a long process. We all shared hopes, visions, and concerns. It was great to hear how similar many of these are and that the barriers to common life are often shared challenges.

Spirituality

I came away from Bradford having met with people for whom spirituality and activism are both deeply important and integral to one another. As part of this experience I learned more about the monastic tradition called the Enneagram: a way of talking about self, sin, and redemption that is as much to do with relationships as with the individual and assumes that we are all capable of effecting change. In both placements I felt that my biggest personal challenge was to learn to live more in the present rather than in the ‘whateversnext’. Something that Bishop Mary from California spoke on in Gloucester Cathedral at the Ordination of Priests this year. This involves a deeper trust in God for things past, present, and future and, I suspect, a greater joy in all of them.

Staying with the Catholic Workers

A big Adventure

During July, I was fortunate to spend two weeks with the London Catholic Workers and two weeks with a city centre priest in Bradford. We went as a family in order that we could all explore vocation together but also have an experience outside of parish ministry that might inform whatever comes next be that parish-focussed or otherwise. We also went camping in Cornwall for two weeks straight after (booked long before the placement) so we had to prepare our two girls for six weeks away from home: a very big adventure for two little girls and quite a journey for the grown-ups too!

Who are the Catholic Workers?

The Catholic Worker movement began in 1930s New York; during the Great Depression. Dorothy Day (Activist, journalist, and convert to Roman Catholicism) and Peter Maurin (French Catholic peasant and agriculturalist) drew together a group of people committed to living out their Christian faith by being alongside the poorest and living simply in order to help others know God’s abundant life. Along with Ammon Hennacy they were also committed to challenge violence and injustice wherever they found it.

Today there are hundreds of Catholic Workers ‘houses of hospitality’ mostly in the USA but also around Europe. Each of these houses is different but they sit within the values and commitments of the original pioneers: Dorothy and Peter.

Sophie, and I went with our girls to stay with the London Catholic Workers at their farmhouse just outside London. One of its founders, Scott Albrecht has been to speak at St Augustine’s Church, Matson and his wife Maria has been named one of five Catholic Women of the Year for 2011 recently.

The Rhythm of the Day

The Catholic Worker Farmhouse is a diverse community rooted in the Roman Catholic Tradition. Some people are committed to the place for the long-term, others are short-term volunteers, others are there because they have nowhere else to go and there stay is for as long or as little as they need.

Because of all this there needs to be an agreed rhythm to the days and weeks; taking the strain out of living together as strangers. So members of the community, along with interns and other volunteers meet each day for Morning prayer at 8am. Morning prayer follows the Catholic Missal but includes a generous amount of silence, bible study and intercessions. I used this time both to be rooted in the needs of the community as well as keep myself anchored back in Matson by praying daily for the needs in our own parish.

Morning Prayer was always followed by discussion on the tasks of the day and any particular pastoral needs of guests. It may be that a guest need help finding work or with legal advocacy of may need money for something. It may be that a new guest is due to arrive and there is rarely much information before she does. Most of the referrals come through the Red Cross or similar agencies that know that Scott and Maria and friends are keen to help if they can.

Every day there is some work to do in the garden and I found this a good exercise in staying in the moment. I am flighty by nature and have a monkey-mind that always wants to jump to the next thing. This kind of work, entered into reflectively is in the Benedictine tradition (think Prinknash Abbey) of seeing work as prayer and prayer as important work. As well as gardening there was often DIY jobs, or car trips to pick up donations of food or other goods.

The rule of the house was that the Kitchen had to be vacated between three and six pm so that whoever was on the rota could cook without interference. With a small kitchen and up to twenty adults plus children rules like this are essential for sanity! Anyone on site at six is expected to come together for the main meal where the Grace is informally said and anything the whole community needs to talk about can be discussed.

Evening Prayer was not part of the rhythm of the day but Sophie and I would usually meet at the lake after the girls were in bed to pray together overlooking the beautiful lake that the farmhouse backs on to.

Wednesday evenings were ‘fun night’ when the ladies would get together and have a social event. While were there Sophie organised both of these and felt it a real privilege to be serving the ladies there in this way. Friday’s were usually film night and although there is no ‘day off’ when you are at the Catholic Worker house Sophie and I managed an evening at the pub towards the end of our stay to have some private time together and to unpack how we felt about everything we had seen and done.

Thursday afternoon included a weekly vigil at nearby Northwood. Northwood is home to a US/UK military intelligence centre. It is where much of the attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq are planned and orchestrated. There in leafy London Suburbia is a centre for the study of war but the prophets tell us we should “study war no more” and Jesus said we should love our neighbour so the Catholic Workers vigil and pamphlet nearby in order to remind people of their need to resist the constant warmongering of governments. This weekly act of witness is energised by living with women whose broken lives are a direct result of the decisions made behind the barbed wire face at Northwood HQ.

Those who work at the farmhouse are expected to have spiritual direction or counselling on Fridays at least fortnightly. I came to see how important this was after being there just five days and suddenly realising how weighed down I was feeling by being confronted with the way our lifestyles and politics in the UK have led to the displacement of so many people – people I shared breakfast and garden with now daily and whose presence I could not ignore.

A Catholic priest once wrote, “The poor tell us who we are and the prophets tell us who we should be, so we hide the poor and kill the prophets.” At the Farmhouse there is nowhere to hide the poor and the prophets speak for themselves.

On Sundays many of the guests go to local churches as do members of the community I went to the Anglican Church just five minutes walk away and with whom the farmhouse has good links and then on to a local Baptist Church with some of the guests.

The Unexpected

Having a rhythm of the community helps with the more spontaneous needs that a household like this throws up and in being available to respond to national events. While we were at the Farmhouse a group of three Swedish Bible College students arrived. They had heard about the Catholic Worker Farmhouse while at college and wanted to know more. There had been plans for a ‘Peace School’ for this had to be cancelled when Scott went into hospital.

We decided that as well as give them an introduction to the house we would offer some workshops on political theology. I led a session on Transforming unjust structures and a Christian response to Wikileaks. Wikileaks is a news agency organisation that securely handles information from whistleblowers. Their most infamous example is a young US Army information analyst who released video footage of US helicopter gunmen taking great glee in gunning down innocent civilians, including children and an international journalist in a suburb of Iraq.

While we were staying at the farmhouse, Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks was facing an appeal hearing at the high court. The Swedish government are trying to extradite him without charge but on allegation of sexual assault. Those of us who believe this is a miscarriage of justice waited to greet him in and out of court and to pray for him and lobby for him outside. I spent much of the day in the public gallery listening to his case in exhausting detail. The whole day was emotionally drawn and reminded me of how physically tiring just commuting in London can be. But it is also a reminder of how the powerful don’t like their secrets being exposed and will stop at nothing to silence their critics.

Gratefulness

Our visit seemed brief but formative. I think if we lived there we would miss being part of a wider community and all that this means; the farmhouse is fairly self-contained in terms of day-to-day living and interactions with the outside world – looking for donations, speaking at events, vigils, counselling - are managed by those inside the community. There is not much room for accidental community as one would experience it in the parish. But there are those within the local churches who faithfully support what happens and there is accountability to the wider Roman Catholic Church that provides its own checks and balances.

But there are thousands of women and children just like those living at the farmhouse who are either sleeping rough or going from sofa to floor at other people’s homes around the country. They have fled terrors we can’t imagine and found our government either won’t help them or tries to send them back. There are even more trafficked women who find themselves homeless and running scared in Britain having followed a dream and discovered a nightmare. The Catholic Workers stand alongside these folk and encourage us to do the same. They live in simplicity and trust God for their daily needs just as Jesus advised for a worry-free life. They give me hope and challenge in equal measure and for that I am grateful.

Derrick is a regular member of St Katharine's congregation and much loved and admired. He's also a fantastic campaigner and advocate for men with cancer and those who care about them. In the video above he tells some of his story.

Derrick, who with his family have been very involved with Race4Men told the Citizen newspaper, " "Being a victim myself with terminal bowel cancer, I know it is very important to make men aware of early signs of this disease. Race for Men is helping in this way, not only by raising money for cancer research, but also making men aware of this dreadful disease."

I attended an event this weekend hosted by the County Council. It was billed as part of the consultation on cuts in services but consultation was not on offer. It was just them giving information and any challenge to their logic was meant with either bafflement or the explanation that they are only there to explain how it will be.

In all of that it became clear to me that the criteria they used for choosing to close Matson library assumes:
Everyone owns a car
All library properties are of equal market value and sale-ability

It follows that Matson will be offered the lowest level of library service of the entire county and offered the least amount of money of all those with services cut.

Third sector stands with the councillors opposing Matson library cuts

Gloucester County Council Must Re-think Library Plans

The Gloucester County Council (GCC) proposals, 'Meeting the Challenge', including plans to close Matson Library, claims it is facilitating a transfer of services to a community-run library. These proposals show a disregard for local democracy and a prejudice against poorer communities. The Meeting the Challenge priorities are to:

Live within our means
Provide the basics
Help communities help themselves.

On each of these priorities the GCC has failed to take responsibility for the future of Matson library.

Provide the basics: Matson needs a fully serviced library

Matson library remains a popular and important facility for people of all ages and demographics. Many local volunteers are stretched to capacity: working at the library through summer projects, Matson Forum events, and weekly drop-ins for young people.

It is important in an area of economic deprivation and high unemployment that access to books and internet job-searches should be locally available. Closing Matson library will be bad for both jobs and literacy in this community. Expecting people to travel to the city centre to access services threatens community spirit, weakens local democracy, and an already precarious volunteerism. Many will be unable to afford regular buses into the city to access centralised services.

Help communities to help themselves: GCC Transfer plan is not viable

Where the GCC's commitments to supporting the transfer to a community-run library are not vague they are sparse. Comparing this social experiment with a community-run library service in Buckinghamshire is superficial and misleading. The place, political context, and support offered are not comparable. In comparing Matson to previous projects, the GCC ignores the changing political context in which all services struggle to find volunteers and grants. They make the mistake of universalising the particular: this is lazy policy making and a recipe for disaster.

In their slender offer of support the GCC sends a clear message to the people of Matson: the GCC expect the library to shut down without a fuss and for local people to take the blame.

The GCC wants the changes to “reflect the changing needs” of residents but within the increasing pressure on volunteering and grant applications and the increased urgency of need for fair and equal access to public service for poorer communities the GCC is exacerbating need, not meeting it.

Live within our means: 'Meeting the Challenge' exploits the poorest communities making services less democratic

To use Matson as a social experiment for re-thinking library services discriminates against one of the poorest communities in the county. Libraries flagged up for 'Library Express' are in wealthier parts of the county. Mooting a community-run library in Matson makes the service vulnerable to exploitation by businesses and grant-making bodies with their own agendas. This is not democracy 'within our means': For the GCC the 'Big Society' is the 'Big Business Society' where external groups take over local services and all accountability to the local users is lost. If the GCC continues with the current plans for libraries then local democracy will be weakened.

Recommendations

That GCC holds well publicised face-to-face consultations in all areas where library services are ear-marked for reduced services.
That Matson Library becomes a Library Express in its current or other suitable location.
GCC guarantees that grant money generated from the sale of library properties be ring-fenced for a community library service which should not be used for any other purpose.
GCC removes the 'Match funded' component of the maintenance grant which may lead to poor communities receiving significantly less support than wealthier ones.

Gloucestershire County Council has proposed that Matson Library be transferred to unspecified 'people' living in the neighbourhood or closed down and sold off as part of a county-wide shake down of library services.

Under the scheme, some of the poorest neighbourhoods in Gloucestershire will see their funded services axed while some of the wealthier areas will continue to have a "full range of library services" for at least 48 hours each week.

Despite being open part-time, Matson library receives around 80,000 visits each year and is an important centre for children's and community activities and for local residents to spend time on the internet looking for work. The library has been on the forefront of themed reading adventure weeks and the celebrated scarecrow trails of recent years.

Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) are not saying they are closing the library; they claim they are leaving the decision to local people whether they want to run the library themselves. However, the transfer arrangements on offer - some shelves and an uspecified number of used books - hardly speaks of a council that is confident in the future of libraries run by local communities.

Together in Matson, a partnership between three Matson churches and the local community has launched a new youth club for children aged 10 - 11 (Years 5 and 6 at primary school).

Glastonbury Pilgrimage

This year a group from St Katharine's and St Hilda's went on pilgrimage to Glastonbury. This ancient site is believed to be the where the first Church in the British Isles was located but it's place in the heart of the regions spirituality far pre-dates even that influence. Avalon was an island refuge in what was a wild and watery region.

Most of the pilgrims stayed at the Abbey retreat house, with views over looking the ruins of the Abbey itself. From the garden it was possible to sneak into the Abbey grounds and take a tour or simply wander.

We were joined by a Mother's Union who were mostly on silent retreat. They were welcoming and joined us for Night Prayer both evenings - although they didn't join us for the sing-along.

We quickly drank the bar dry of white wine, which after a hot day climbing the Tor was essential tonic for many pilgrims. But the stories and photos of the adventures kept flowing.

One pilgrim spent much of the time looking for ice cream, cuddles and squirrels. At least, I think it was only one pilgrim.

A good time was had by all.

The Baptist, Roman Catholic, and Anglican churches in Matson got together during Holy Week to offer children of Moat, Robinswood, and Finlay Schools the opportunity to walk, talk, and think their way through the story of Easter.

Experience Easter events took place throughout the diocese in the run up to Easter amidst much publicity and a great deal of work and prayer.

The Matson event was held at the Church of St Augustine of Canterbury - opposite the Musket - which gave beautiful surrounds to the creative displays of the key events in the Holy Week story.

Children of different ages and abilities reflected on the hopes, dreams, fears, pain, and joy of Jesus and his followers as they thought about their own hopes, dreams, fears, pain, and joy.

Many children thought about their own hopes and fears for their own communities too and took with them a new energy for changing and creating a new and better world. This too is a resurrection story.

Each of the schools has a strong and ongoing working friendship with the churches involved which is part of what made the day possible. Finlay School is also served by the Red Wedge through an Open the Book Group drawn from several Anglican Churches in the area.
