A Farewell to Jeni

Matson Rector swaps Doc’ Martens for Welly Boots and The Good Life

A farewell party is planned for Saturday 31st March at St Hilda’s Hall (3-5pm) for Revd Canon Dr Jeni Parsons who has been rector at St Katharine’s Church in Matson for just over eight years and heads off to Wales to begin a new life as a small holder.

Jeni will be much missed by the residents, community groups, and other Churches who are all welcome to attend. One member of St Katharine’s Church said, “willingness to include and welcome everyone and anyone” is a hallmark of the way Christian faith has been expressed at St Katharine’s since Jeni’s arrival “everyone is welcome here”.

The past twelve months has seen the new St Hilda’s Hall – a seven-year project in partnership with Elim Housing – built and put to all kinds of use with and for the community. The community building makes a fitting place to say goodbye to a familiar figure in Matson life as she goes to swap her “Doc’ Martens” and pastoral care for welly boots and mucking out.

“St Katharine’s, though a poor parish, has always been a generous community; but it was Jeni who showed us how to give generously.” Pat Morefield, Churchwarden.

“As a Parish Priest I think Jeni has been an inspiration to Matson.  She has worked tirelessly and often above and beyond the call of duty.  We will probably never know all the things she has done and she will be missed tremendously - no more 'lady priest' in her Doc Martins with her dog Ziggy, around the Parish” Pam Marsh, Churchwarden.

  1. Jeni was part of the process for testing my call to ordination and our meeting certainly was challenging and enjoyable. She was also on the interview panel for a Diocesan job and she understood my feelings when not selected. We shall miss her...
